What is your favorite song written by Brian Wilson?

I will pick something unconventional and go with "Surf's Up."

Hey there, new to this but am surprised there aren't more BW fans here!!!

Yeah, would have to agree with "Surf's Up" being my favourite, especially after seeing him play it at his Melbourne show.

Off the solo albums, current fave would have to be "Melt Away".

      Welcome, Rob.

I just started this tribe a few days ago. I expect the fans to come flooding in any time now.

"Melt Away". I forgot about that one. I'll go with that one too.

Well, since I have already outed myself privately to The Chuckster that I am not as familiar with BW as I should be, I will say I really, really like Frank Black's cover of Hang On To Your Ego, and another song on the same EP that sounds like it should've been written by BW named Surf Epic.

The words of "Surf's Up" were written by Van Dyke Parks
and I saw him in a documentary saying the the words were not meant to make sense.

It occurs on SMiLE at the end of the Generations Suite.

I also like "Feel Flows", which also occurs on the "Surf's Up" album along with "Till I Die".

not literal sense perhaps, but in a more poetic, metaphorical, symbolic, abstract sorta way, it makes a lotta sense to me ;-)

Seconded on Feel Flows - Carl at his mystical, psychedelic best. And featured as the closing track on the wonderful movie "Almost Famous".

Feel Flows sounded amazing from the movie theater sound system at the end of Almost Famous. I sat through the credits to hear the whole thing.

            me too Chuck

i understand that Surfs Up and Sunflower are available on some kinda 5.1 esque clever sound system, but being a bit slow when it comes to technical matters, im yet to experience this.

Certainly some amazing production skills went into these albums tho.

The Sunflower/Surf's Up CD is my favourite of the two-album CDs that I've got. Also it was the only one available at the Royal Festival Hall record store when I went to see Brian Wilson perform SMiLE on the second night.

i've heard some of the Beach Boys classics over the years, and some of Brian Wilson's solo work. however, i checked out Smile from the library recently, and haven't been able to stop listenning to it on an almost daily basis!

i would say that any song from this CD is my favorite, but that Vege-Tables is definitely high on my list of favorites, for, among other reasons, it's hyperbolic goofy wonderfulness and absolute refusal to conform to expectations, especially of supposed coolness or hipness.

When I bought SMiLE eleven months ago. I played it almost daily for at least two months. I liked no part better than the whole.

i would have to say love and mercy...i love that bit in the "i just wasn't made for these times" documentary when he talks about his chest hurting and feeling like it was going to burst, so he sat at the piano and wrote that song.

Smile is a good one to listen from beginning to end. It's not the sort of CD that would go well in a random mix with 50 other CDs worth of music stuffed into an iPod.

Nor one that a radio play of one track would do justice to.

I with you there, d, on Vegetables.

Though I'm also a fan of Good Vibration if only because it is a kick to do just the low end of the song at karaoke!
