A BBC radio station survey came up with a list of the 10 most overrated albums of all time.
They included Pet Sounds at number 8. That's crazy!
Here is the whole list.

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Tue, October 4, 2005 - 3:54 AMits not unusual in these dumb polls for whoever wins the best of poll to then go on to win the most overrated poll. it says more about polls than art ..
meanwhile, i met a singer/songwriter the other day and we were chatting for a while, eventually he asked what sort of music I do so I told him some of the things Im up to and mentioned Im also in a Beach Boys covers band - he replied "well, arent we all really"

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Tue, October 4, 2005 - 4:49 AMI might have judged it as overated by the four or so tracks of it I had heard on radio.
But when I heard the whole album, I felt that it was at least as good as they said it was. In other words, it's not overated.
If I could vote against and album being classed as overrated, I'd vote against Pet Sounds.
I see there is nothing by Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Meat Loaf or Queen in the list. -

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Tue, October 4, 2005 - 10:31 PMI think Pet Sounds is a great album. It really came to life when the stereo version was finally released.
It's intersting to note that Pet Sounds was not a big seller when it was first released. Capitol records quickly released "The Best Of The Beach Boys" to make up for the poor sales of Pet Sounds. -

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Wed, October 5, 2005 - 3:41 AMit was a fairly big seller actually - specially in this country - just not compared to the staggering sales figures that the Beach Boys (and Capitol records) were used to.
also Capitol sensing that it was "new music" didnt exactly try hard to market it either in scale or technique

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Wed, October 5, 2005 - 5:10 AMThere were only 10 albums in the poll. So Pet Sounds as done well to come 8th (above the Sex Pistols and the Simths).

Re: Pet Sounds Overrated?
Thu, March 29, 2007 - 11:48 AMNo, "Pet Sounds" is certainly not over-rated, in fact it's not appreciated enough.
Sure, Rock journalists will praise it to sound cool and hip, but I would love to hear more from musicians themselves praising it.
In this context, it's not praised enough.
I loved Nirvana when they first came out, since Kobain killed himself, I'm sick of the myth.
"Nevermind" is the most OVER hyped record of all. If I never hear it again it's too soon.
Years ago, I lent my copy of Pet Sounds to a musician who said he HATED The Beach Boys. He came back later saying "Wow... I have a completely different view of them now, I really liked this record."
